A Feminist Perspective of Wife of Bath Many literary critics throughout the years have labeled the Wife of Bath, the gap-toothed (23) character of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, a feminist. She is a strong-willed and dominant woman who gets what she wants when she wants it. However, this is not the definition of a feminist. A feminist is someone who believes that women and men are equal, while also is able to recognize and appreciate the unique characteristics of both sexes. A feminist celebrates what it means to be a woman, and a feminist is definitely not what Chaucer meant his character to be interpreted as. If anything, the Wife of Bath could safely be called a sexist. The Wife of Baths greedy need for complete control over men reflects in most of her actions. She seems proud of this, and constantly describes women as cruel creatures that bring great sorrow to men. When talking about her first three husbands, she says that she governed them (193), and chided them cruelly (193). She makes life for her husbands a living hell, having no respect for their feelings. Just like the women questioned in her story, she cares only for riches...amusement...rich apparel..., to be flattered and pampered, and for pleasure in bed (225). When talking of her first three marriages, she says: Since they had given me all their land, why should I take pains to please them, unless it be for my own profit and pleasure (192). In her story, the moral is that all women want to hold the whip in a relationship, and it is in the mans best interest to let them do so. An estimated 23 million of the worlds population regularly take illicit drugs, and the Drug Enforcement Administration estimated that 13.6 million of those who habitually used illegal drugs in 1998 were Americans. Even in our current everyday motions of life and productivity, we have set the path for self-destruction. We awake to the kick of caffeine, soothe our nerves with tobacco, ease our tension headaches with aspirin, wind down the day with alcohol, and swallow an antihistamine to help us sleep all perfectly legal, respectable, and even expected (Drug Abuse 195). The first solution that comes to mind is to punish the individuals that choose to use these illicit substances, just as they seem to punish the members of society that choose to be drug free. To use this solution effectively you must compose a list of substances that are to be considered illegal drugs, which are only illegal in the first place, because certain politicians and voters decided for us that they should be. Once you have that list of substances, you must decide what the consequences of violating the laws of the list will be, and how you are going to punish those who choose to be drug offenders. These two races make up 20 percent of the marijuana smokers in the United States, but comprise 58 percent of the marijuana offenders sentenced under federal law. During the years Congress prohibited alcohol, the greatest crime wave in our countrys history was launched as a result of this decision. This time period of organized crime and prohibition lead to thousands of deaths due to bad alcohol, and created general contempt among the citizens for the laws of the United States. As a result of our current prohibition, can you tell where our great nation is headed now? History repeats itself in numerous ways quite often. The next solution that one might think of, which has very good intentions but is just not even close to being a complete solution, is to educate the public and the offenders about drug abuse. For the most part, it seems unlikely that a reasonably sane individual will become a drug addict, if he knows in advance what the addiction is going to be like. If education is going to be an effective deterrent of drug abuse, it must begin during grade school, because one out of every six 13-year-olds has tried marijuana at least once. Our children must be taught the many dangers of drug abuse and strategies to avoid the abuse of these illicit substances, prior to middle and high school, where availability and peer pressure can make the use of drugs all too acceptable and extremely easy to fall for. Although education is a far cry from being a complete solution, as I said before, it can be very effective when used in combination with other plausible solutions. One would think that with continual diarrhea that a person with IBS would lose weight, be malnourished, or that they would develop more serious digestive problems. However, these are very rare. Only in a very small number of cases does IBS become so disabling that it can interfere with a persons normal activities. But some people withdraw from activi ties because the diarrhea or constipation bothers them. In such cases, doctors may recommend mental health counseling. Most patients who have IBS seek help from a gastroenterologist. A gastroenterologist is a doctor who specializes in the digestive system. Tests to diagnose IBS might include lab analyses of feces and barium X-rays of the lower digestive tract. For a barium X-ray, a patient drinks a special kind of liquid drink that contains barium. With the barium, the doctor can see how the liquid flows through the digestive system. A doctor may also perform a sigmoidoscopy. In this class, one of the most disturbing types of abuse that I have learned about is the neglect of children. Hard to detect and even harder to prove, it is the most common form of family violence between senior citizens who live with their families. In 1998 there were an estimated 903,000 victims of child maltreatment, and more than half (53 percent) suffered from neglect. In an independent study, the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse estimated that 3,140,000 children were reported for all types of maltreatment in 1994, and child neglect accounted for approximately 45% of reported cases and 49% of substantiated cases. Also, in 1994, the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse estimated that 1,271 children died as a result of maltreatment of which 42% were attributed to neglect. Child neglect is as specific a finding as child abuse, though it is more common and often more devastating. Despite this, cases of child neglect are sometimes investigated and documented poorly, simply because the definition of neglect is not clear to the investigator, who then may not be sure what precisely to look for. Educational neglect occurs when a child is allowed to engage in chronic truancy, is of mandatory school age, but not enrolled in school or receiving school training, and/or is not receiving needed special educational training. Educational neglect can lead to underachievement in acquiring necessary basic skills, drop ping out of school, and/or continually disruptive behavior. Emotional neglect includes such actions as chronic or extreme spousal abuse in the childs presence, allowing a child to use drugs or alcohol, refusal or failure to provide needed psychological care, constantly putting the child down, and withholding of affection. This pattern of behavior can lead to poor self-image, alcohol or drug abuse, destructive behavior, and even suicide.
